About
Dr. Anne M. Thompson, Senior Scientist Emeritus at NASA/GSFC Center and Senior Research Faculty at UMBC, is best known for theoretical and observational advances in atmospheric chemistry, including: (1) characterization of Earth’s atmospheric oxidizing capacity and its relation to climate change; (2) NASA’s award-winning Southern Hemisphere Additional Ozonesondes network; (3) leadership in NASA field campaigns. Thompson’s focus on ozonesonde quality assurance through the WMO has built capacity in Asia, South America, Africa. Her work appears in 300-plus publications, most recently on the 2019 SCOAPE satellite observations of offshore oil and gas activity. In 2010-2011 Thompson was a Fulbright scholar in South Africa. Awards include the AMS Suomi Technology Medal, AGU’s Roger Revelle Medal, membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Am. Meteorological Society Honorary Member (2025).

Atmospheric trace gases in polluted and remote regions, especially the tropics, Satellite validation, ozone measurements and trends in the troposphere & lower stratosphere
