He is the Director of UMBC’s Center for Cybersecurity. He is a Fellow of IEEE. He is also an Affiliate Professor of Medicine and Radiology at UM Baltimore, and an Affiliate Professor of Gerontology. Dr. Joshi obtained a B.Tech degree from IIT Delhi in 1989, and a Masters and Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1991 and 1993 respectively. Dr. Joshi’s research is interdisciplinary, with application of AI and Mobile Systems to fields as diverse as Cybersecurity, Healthcare, and Social media. Dr. Joshi has published over 250 papers, with over 30,000 citations, an h-index of 89, and 9 granted patents.
Research interests
Joshi's research interests are in the broad area of AI (especially Knowledge Graphs, Deep Neural Networks, Machine Learning and NLP), Cybersecurity, Mobile and Pervasive Systems, and Social Media. He has worked collaboratively with faculty in areas as diverse as information systems, gerontology, medicine, and public policy, in addition to colleagues within the CSEE department at UMBC. At UMBC, Joshi is one of the founders of the Ebiquity group (https://ebiquity.umbc.edu/) . Joshi is also interested in educational research around teaching computing to a wider audience than just CS majors, and specifically including groups historically underrepresented in computing in the US.
Teaching interests
Dr. Joshi teaches core CS courses like Operating Systems, Networking, and Security. In addition, he teaches courses on mobile computing, web mining, and an honors college course on Privacy and Security in a Mobile, Social World. Dr. Joshi's approach to computing is interdisciplinary. He was instrumental in launching the Data Science MPS program and the Computing Minor, both in collaborations with departments across all the colleges of UMBC. Dr. Joshi also launched the Cyberscholars program with support from Northrop Grumman, which has nearly 50% women and 45% students from groups historically underrepresented in computing.
