About
Gloria Chuku is a historian with over 30 years of teaching and research experience. She is Professor and Chair of Africana Studies; and Affiliate Professor of Gender, Women’s + Sexuality Studies; Language, Literacy and Culture Ph.D. Program; and Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, USA.
Research interests
Her research has focused primarily on Igbo history; women in colonial and postcolonial political economies of Nigeria and Africa; ethnonationalisms and conflicts in Nigeria; gender and conflicts in Nigeria and Africa; African nationalism and intellectual history; and gender and African Diapora. She has published extensively in these areas, including, a monograph: Igbo Women and Economic Transformation in Southeastern Nigeria, 1900-1960 (2005); two edited volumes: The Igbo Intellectual Tradition: Creative Conflict in African and African Diasporic Thought (2013); Ethnicities, Nationalities, and Cross-Cultural Representations in Africa and the Diaspora (2015); a coedited book: Women and the Nigeria-Biafra War: Reframing Gender and Conflict in Africa (2020); and over 60 scholarly articles.
Teaching interests
She teaches courses in African history, including Introduction to African History from earliest time to independence; Africa: Culture and Development; Introduction to Contemporary Africa; Contemporary African Politics; Islam in Africa; West African History from earliest time to independence; and Women in Africa and the Diaspora
