About
Jasmine Shumaker is a tenured Reference & Instruction Librarian at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and a Master’s in Library and Information Studies from the University of Oklahoma. She is truly a generalist in that she supports a mix of social sciences, humanities, and STEM departments. Jasmine’s research interests include patron data privacy and intentional mentorship of LIS graduate students. She’s been an advocate for stronger guidelines in place for AI and AI literacy on her campus, thanks in part to her involvement with the Library Freedom Project. Her recent publications include “In ‘Heinsight’: Breaking Ground on Advocacy for Academic Library Database Trials Using HeinOnline” in the Journal of Creative Library Practice, “Bridging the Mind and Body A Mini Pantry Collaboration Within a Library” in the Journal of Library Outreach and Engagement, along with multiple book reviews in College & Research Libraries.
Prior to joining academic librarianship, she worked as an Adult Services Librarian with the District of Columbia Public Library, and was the Business Librarian for the Enoch Pratt Free Library / State Library Resource Center in Baltimore, Maryland. In her spare time, Jasmine enjoys listening to podcasts, experimenting with her InstantPot, and traveling.
