Shannon Sauro , Ph.D. in Educational Linguistics (University of Pennsylvania), docent in Engelska med språkdidaktisk inriktning/English language education (Malmö University), is a professor in the department of Education at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She specializes in technologically-mediated language teaching and learning and second language literacy. Originally from Montréal, Canada, she was raised and educated in the United States and has taught in Japan, the United States, and Sweden. She holds a bachelor’s degree in German, political science and history from Duke University and a master’s degree in TESOL from Iowa State University.
Research interests
Shannon Sauro's areas of research include the intersection of online fan practices, especially fan fiction) and language learning and teaching, and the role of virtual exchange/telecollaboration in language teacher education.
Teaching interests
Shannon Sauro's teaching interests include a focus on teaching academic writing in English with an emphasis on creative writing that draws upon fanfiction in the digital wilds, theories of second language acquisition, and teaching methods that incorporate a wide range of digital technologies (also known as computer-assisted language learning) which include bridging the digital wilds with the language classroom and incorporating virtual exchange in both language teaching and teacher education.
