DESCRIPTION:The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents the exhibition Picturing Mobility: Black Tourism and Leisure during the Jim Crow Era\, on display from September 2 through December 19. \nPicturing Mobility explores what it meant to seek leisure and travel as a Black American during the Jim Crow era. The exhibition features snapshots and travel ephemera of Black leisure experiences primarily from the mid-Atlantic during the 1920s to 1960s. From beach outings to family road trips\, these images offer glimpses into everyday moments of happiness\, relaxation and community\, challenging dominant narratives that define the era solely through restriction and struggle. SUMMARY:SPARK: Industrial Afterglow
DESCRIPTION:SPARK VII: Industrial Afterglow\, a collaboration between UMBC and Towson University\, brings together over twenty artists working across sculpture\, installation\, sound\, photography\, video\, textiles\, and ecological documentation to explore what lingers in the wake of industrial and technological systems. \nFrom bioplastic light sculptures and cyanotype archives to rewilded cityscapes and AI-coded sea monsters\, the exhibition casts light — literal and symbolic — on the residues of industry\, the reconfigurations of ecosystems\, and the speculative futures already blooming in the present. \nAs a former industrial port city undergoing rapid urban transformation\, Baltimore provides a vital lens through which to consider the aftermath of extractive systems and the possibilities of repair. Industrial Afterglow asks: What remains after infrastructures collapse? How do ecologies adapt and resist? What does it mean to imagine otherwise? By attending to what still glows\, hums\, or grows through the ruins\, this exhibition transforms light from metaphor into method — revealing the unseen\, mourning the obsolete\, and illuminating paths toward speculative futures. \nParticipating artists include Chelsey Barrera\, Sue Borchardt\, Lynn Cazabon\, Cathy Cook\, McCoy Chance\, Danielle d’Amico\, Alexandra Garove\, Eunice Hong\, Gracie Horne\, Jinyoung Koh\, Dara Lorenzo\, Jenee Mateer\, Leah Clare Michaels\, Eric Millikin\, Timothy Nohe\, Edgar Reyes\, Sarah G. SUMMARY:Celebrating Alison Knowles
DESCRIPTION:The campus community is invited to participate in an event to celebrate the life and work Fluxus artist Alison Knowles\, who had a long and impactful relationship with the arts at UMBC. Knowles passed away on October 29. An exhibition of her books\, boxes\, and performance work will be on display in the Library Rotunda\, and attendees are invited to participate in a performance of Shoes of Your Choice. \nIn Shoes of Your Choice (1963) “a member of the audience is invited to come forward to a microphone if one is available and describe a pair of shoes\, the ones they are wearing or another pair. They are encouraged to tell where they got them\, the size\, color\, why they like them\, etc.” \nDress code: wear shoes! \n\nIn the early 1960s\, Alison Knowles (29 April 1933 – 29 October 2025) created the Notations book of experimental composition with John Cage\, as well as Coeurs Volants\, a print with Marcel Duchamp\, both published by Something Else Press. She also traveled and performed with the Fluxus group throughout Europe\, Asia and United States. With Fluxus\, she made the Bean Rolls by invitation of George Maciunus\, a canned book that appeared in the Whitney Museum exhibition The American Century (2000). The Big Book (1967)\, a walk in book installation was comprised of 8-foot pages\, moving around a center spine\, permitting the spectator/reader to go inside the book. In 1968\, The House of Dust\, programmed with the help of composer James Tenney\, was recognized as the first computer poem on record\, winning her a Guggenheim Fellowship; she brought this work to CalArts while she taught there from 1970–72. \nOn the occasion of Documenta X in Kassel\, Germany\, Knowles was appointed a Guest Professor. She taught at Sommerakademie in Salzburg in 1990. Her work was featured in the exhibition In the Spirit of Fluxus and Out of Actions\, which toured from Los Angeles MOCA. In 2001\, she performed and exhibited new paper and sound works at the Drawing Center in New York. The Time Samples (2006) exhibition traveled from Venice to New York. In May of 2008 she performed three Event Scores at the Tate Long Weekend in London. Make a Salad (recently performed by UMBC’s Ruckus ensemble) drew a record audience of 3\,000 people. Her Event Threads series appeared for the first time in New York at Miguel Abreu Gallery\, and traveled to Genova and Berlin. She performed in Berne and Zurich in December 2008. In January 2009\, she exhibited and performed in The 3rd Mind: American Artists Contemplate Asia\, 1860–1989 at the Guggenheim Museum. For the duration of the exhibit she performed weekly with the Giant Beanturner. \nIn 1999\, Alison Knowles donated the material now known as the Dick Higgins Collection to UMBC. This collection provides an overview of Fluxus artwork and includes rare examples from the Something Else Press publications. Over 70 artists are represented in this collection\, which includes a sampling of Dick Higgins’s artwork\, publications\, and exhibition materials; publications from Something Else Press; and individual and collaborative artwork and publications from members of the greater Fluxus movement. DESCRIPTION:The Center for Art\, Design\, and Visual Culture presents a special one-night-only outdoor screening and performance with KaMag\, the performance collaboration between artist María Magdalena Campos-Pons and musician Kamaal Malak. \nVignettes in 3 Sessions: An Immersive Ancestral Experience with KaMag is an interactive performance created for the CADVC. KaMag invites members of the public into a shared ritual environment — “a sacred space where ancestral energies transcend temporal boundaries\, creating a transformative portal between past and present.” The performance unfolds as a multi-media\, multi-sensory sanctuary combining spoken word\, live music\, sound design\, and other sensorial experiences in an intimate\, participatory format. \nThe performance launches a new public projection of “I am Soil – My Tears Are Water” (2025)\, a single-channel video by Kamaal Malak and María Magdalena Campos-Pons that has been adapted for the UMBC Fine Arts Building amphitheater projection program. Conceived for large-scale projection and collective viewing\, the work transforms the amphitheater into a reflective gathering space\, bringing KaMag’s layered meditations on ancestry\, land\, and healing into public space. \nKaMag’s recent work has included major multi-sensory performances at institutions such as Tate Modern and the São Paulo Biennial\, where Campos-Pons and Malak have developed a practice that bridges performance\, sound\, and moving image to explore Afro-diasporic spiritual\, historical\, and ecological inheritances. \n\nPlease join us for a reception from 6 to 7 p.m.\, followed by the performance at 7 p.m. \nAdmission is free. \nThe CADVC is located on the first floor of the Fine Arts Building. Premiered in 1905\, the concerto quickly became one of the composer’s most loved works\, reflecting a brilliant style and extraordinary virtuosity. \nThe concert will also feature the world premiere of Chesapeake\, written by Rich Sigwald ’03\, music\, in honor of E. SUMMARY:Celebrating Linda Dusman
DESCRIPTION:After 37 years of teaching in higher education\, including 25 years at UMBC\, composer Linda Dusman will retire at the end of 2025. The campus community is invited to celebrate her creativity and contributions with a concert of her works performed by UMBC faculty: \n\nFlashpoint (solo bass flute) performed by Lisa Cella\nDiverging Flints (piano trio) performed by the Ruckus ensemble\nmagnificat 4: Ida Ida (surround audio)\nSubterranea (percussion quartet) performed by the Umbilicus ensemble\nTerra Mycelia performed by the Ruckus ensemble\nThreading Mycelia (solo trombone) performed by Patrick Crossland (premiere)\n\n\nLinda Dusman explores the territory between concert music and sonic art in her creative practice. She examines the natural world\, current politics\, and the human experience as a catalyst for constructing listening experiences that encourage a heightened awareness of the moment. Recent works include Terra Mycelia\, composed for the Ruckus ensemble for premiere in 2024\, and Infinite Transformations\, a bioart installation created collaboratively with Foad Hamidi\, Alan Wonneberger\, Lee Boot\, and Ryan Zuber which premiered in 2023. Triptych of Gossips\, a setting of Serena Hilsinger’s eponymous epic poem\, has become a cornerstone of Duo della Luna’s repertoire\, and in 2024 received the Miriam Gideon award from the International Alliance for Women in Music. Dusman’s solo CD Flashpoint was released by NEUMA Records in 2023 to critical acclaim. \nDusman’s work has been awarded by the International Alliance for Women in Music\, Meet the Composer\, the Swiss Women’s Music Forum\, the American Composers Forum\, the International Electroacoustic Music Festival of Sao Paulo\, Brazil\, the Ucross Foundation\, and the State of Maryland in 2004\, 2006\, and 2011 (in both the Music: Composition and the Visual Arts: Media categories).
