DESCRIPTION:Shakespeare in Harlem moves downtown to the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company! If you missed the performances at UMBC’s Proscenium Theatre in October and November\, be sure to reserve tickets for four performances in January! \nUMBC Theatre presents Shakespeare in Harlem by Langston Hughes\, adapted and directed by Gerrad Alex Taylor\, a university-professional collaboration between UMBC Theatre and the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company. \nThe year 2025 marks the centennial of the Harlem Renaissance\, perhaps the largest cultural and artistic American movement of the 20th century. In celebration\, the Department of Theatre will amplify the work of Black and African American theatre-makers and our engagement with the Baltimore theatre community by mounting an adaptation of Shakespeare in Harlem by Langston Hughes. \nA rare gem from Langston Hughes\, this collection of monologue poems revives the rhythms of jazz\, the blues\, and the pulse of the Harlem Renaissance—its love\, struggles\, and street-corner spirit. In director Gerrad Alex Taylor’s adaptation\, Hughes’ words come alive in a dynamic full-length play\, blending poetry\, music\, and dance for an immersive journey into the world he so vividly celebrated. \nThe production process included a UMBC residency of Chesapeake Shakespeare Company’s Black Classical Acting Ensemble in the Fall of 2025\, culminating in a two-week run of the play performed by a cast of professionals and students. SUMMARY:Stuart Saunders Smith: The Night Suite
DESCRIPTION:Join us January 21–25 for five concerts — collectively called The Night Suite — that celebrate the life and creativity of composer Stuart Saunders Smith\, who was professor of music at UMBC for many years. His more than 300 compositions\, both solo and ensemble\, explore a diverse world of sound and experimentation. A frequent author of percussion music\, Smith returned time and again to the vibraphone\, an instrument featured throughout The Night Suite. Composition\, for me\, is autobiographical. Composing means making sense of my person and personal history. I keep company with myself\, and come to understand myself.” \nStuart Saunders Smith’s music is published by Sonic Art Editions (Smith Publications) and has been recorded on New World Records\, 11 West Records\, Centaur Records\, Opus One Records\, O.O. Discs\, Cadenza\, and GAC Sweden. \nDuring his long career\, Smith served on the faculty of the Atlantic Center for the Arts\, the Darmstadt Musikinstitut (Germany)\, Percussion Workshop Poland\, and UMBC. He was in residence at the University of California San Diego\, Yale University\, Documenta 1992 (Kassel\, Germany)\, the University of Gothenberg (Sweden)\, and New College Florida. \nSmith did not compose using any pre-compositional systems or designs. Concerning his compositional process. Rather\, with each piece\, he proclaimed and reconsidered his core beliefs\, sound by sound\, in the context of decades of music-making. He held that each sound is intelligent\, and\, when listened to\, could direct the course of events in the composition. In this way\, he listened to each sound to tell him what sound should come next\, until each piece was finished. \n\nAll performances will be held in Linehan Concert Hall. \nAdmission is free. \n\nLinehan Concert Hall\, located in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building\, is easy to visit\, with plenty of free parking. SUMMARY:Mary Ellen Mark: Ward 81
DESCRIPTION:The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents Mary Ellen Mark: Ward 81\, a photography exhibition on display from January 26 through May 22. \nIn 1976\, American photographer Mary Ellen Mark and sociologist Karen Folger Jacobs spent thirty-six days living in the Oregon State Hospital\, where they photographed the residents of Ward 81\, the hospital’s all-female\, high-security psychiatric unit. Their unprecedented access allowed them to create a deeply nuanced portrayal of women navigating psychiatric care in the mid-1970s.
