DESCRIPTION:The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents Mary Ellen Mark: Ward 81\, a photography exhibition on display from January 26 through May 22. \nIn 1976\, American photographer Mary Ellen Mark and sociologist Karen Folger Jacobs spent thirty-six days living in the Oregon State Hospital\, where they photographed the residents of Ward 81\, the hospital’s all-female\, high-security psychiatric unit. Their unprecedented access allowed them to create a deeply nuanced portrayal of women navigating psychiatric care in the mid-1970s. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special event with Site/Unseen\, a production by Orange Grove Dance that brings ten performers into dynamic partnership with sidewalks\, stairways\, and the UMBC amphitheatre. Through shared weight\, timing\, and physical negotiation\, bodies and architecture collide and collaborate\, revealing the unseen choreography woven into the spaces we pass through every day. \nThis outdoor performance\, directed and choreographed by OGD artistic directors Colette Krogol and Matt Reeves\, travels a short distance across campus\, beginning at UMBC’s Performing Arts and Humanities Building and concluding at the Fine Arts Building Amphitheatre. SUMMARY:The Polar Ice Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Imaging Research Center (IRC) presents The Polar Ice Museum\, a series of artworks and immersive\, data-driven installations that transform polar data into meaningful public engagement experiences on sea level\, climate\, and related environmental issues. The Polar Ice Museum will be open April 30 through May 2\, with an Opening Reception on Thursday\, April 30\, from 4 to 6 p.m. \nLed by the IRC in collaboration with UMBC’s iHARP (Institute for Harnessing Data and Model Revolution in the Polar Regions)\, with support from the National Science Foundation\, the project draws on climate data from NASA and research conducted in Greenland. Visitors encounter a wall of videos depicting an ice cave and are invited to participate by altering visualizations of glaciers and sea-level change\, both within the polar ice cave and at a South Baltimore landmark affected by flooding. Water-filled relief sculptures\, interactive sound objects\, VR climate games\, and relevant information will all be on display. \nAt the center of the installation is a floating white circular table that features a 3D relief. As dark water fills the relief\, it gradually reveals a photographic image of Speed’s Barber & Beauty salon in South Baltimore’s Turners Station neighborhood. This 50-year-old business is part of a community already affected by rising sea levels and is expected to face severe flooding by 2050. SUMMARY:Wei Leng Tay: Migratory Paths\, from Photographic Representation to Materiality
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, artist Wei Leng Tay will discuss modes of narrative-making in her art\, taking migration as a central premise. From her beginnings in journalism to her current practice\, she will speak about shifting ideas and uses of representation and materiality in relation to the photographic medium. She will discuss ways migration moves through some of her works\, from topic to medium to form. The Other Shore\, a photographic and interview-based audio work\, tells a story of a new generation of mainland Chinese migrants in Hong Kong. you think it over slowly\, slowly choose…\, considers statelessness through the materiality of the photograph. Works in Untitled (family slides 60s–70s) question how the objecthood of photographs shape the ways personal and collective memory converge\, and how photographs can constitute ideas of history. Through these examples\, Tay will surface the complex relationships between history\, embodiment\, and representation entangled with the photographic image. \n\nBased in Singapore\, artist Wei Leng Tay works across photography\, video\, and installation and explores constructions of identity\, memory\, and history through her practice. Her works draw on long-term engagements with individuals\, families\, and communities\, and include research into photographic archives\, interviews\, and collaborative processes. Central to her practice is a sustained inquiry into the medium of photography through its materiality\, modes of circulation\, and communicative possibilities. By working at the intersection of the intimate and the structural\, Tay unpacks the complexities of belonging\, displacement\, and the politics of representation\, bringing attention to what it means to be human within today’s shifting political and cultural contexts. \nOriginally trained in biology at McGill University\, Tay’s early professional experience was in photojournalism\, working as a photo editor and photographer for news organisations such as TIME Magazine’s Asia edition in Hong Kong. This background continues to inform her inquiry into the instrumentalization of photography and the politics of image-making. Tay later completed her MFA at Bard College and has since developed a practice that bridges research\, pedagogy\, and collaboration. She was most recently a lecturer of art practice at Yale-NUS College and remains invested in teaching as a form of knowledge exchange and artistic inquiry. \n\nAdmission is free. \n\nThis artist talk is supported by the Department of Visual Arts and CIRCA\, with additional support from the Albin O. SUMMARY:UMBC Gamelan Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Music presents the UMBC Gamelan Ensemble under the direction of Michelle Purdy. \nThe ensemble performs on a central Javanese gamelan\, a gong-chime orchestra of Indonesia. Although most of the instruments of the gamelan are made of bronze\, the ensemble also includes drums\, xylophones\, bamboo flutes\, and plucked and bowed string instruments. \nThe ensemble also performs on a Balinese gamelan angklung\, one of many types of gong-chime orchestras from the island of Bali\, Indonesia. This small ensemble\, made up of gongs\, single-octave metallophones\, drums\, cymbals\, and flutes\, is tuned to a four-tone slendro scale. \n\nAdmission is free\, but tickets are required. DESCRIPTION:Explore the intersection between music and science as Matt Belzer\, the 2025 CIRCA-IMET Artist-in-Residence\, presents his new work The Ocean is Aware: A Suite for 5 Creative Musicians in 5 Movements\, featuring the composer on alto and soprano saxophones\, Juan Sebastián Delgado\, cello\, Dustin Donahue\, percussion\, Larry Melton\, acoustic and electric bass\, and Mark Merella\, hybrid drum kit. \nMatt Belzer\, director of the jazz studies program and teaching professor in the Department of Music\, was been awarded the 2025 CIRCA-IMET Artist-in-Residence Fellowship\, a joint program between the Center for Innovation\, Research\, and Creativity\, and the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology. During his residency\, Belzer consulted with scientists at IMET to understand sensory systems\, comparative life spans\, and other biological and behavioral processes to create The Ocean is Aware\, a quintet for five musicians. SUMMARY:CAT’s Cradle: New Narratives in Art History
DESCRIPTION:Join UMBC’s senior art history students for a showcase highlighting their independent capstone projects\, or Creative Art Theses (CAT)\, that pull at the threads of our visual past to weave new understandings of the present. \nThe projects span the reimagined lives of lost Ancient Greek artifacts and the socio-historical foundations of Castle Rising to the subversive power of women’s prison zines. These emerging scholars also turn a critical eye toward the institutions of art and culture by interrogating the accessibility of visual literacy\, the cultural politics of Black identity in museum spaces\, and an exploration of art that maintains an antagonistic relationship to the viewer.
