Three UMBC faculty studying the human brain to offer options for treatment and early intervention

Three UMBC faculty have been awarded two of 18 new grants announced by the National Science Foundation under the Neural and Cognitive Systems (NCS) program to support multidisciplinary research related to the brain and behavior.

Fow-Sen Choa, professor of computer science and electrical engineering (CSEE), will receive nearly half a million dollars over three years from the NSF to develop technology that will allow very targeted stimulation to be delivered to any area in the brain.

Currently many neural diseases, like Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism have either partial or no treatment. Effective techniques used to treat people with, for example, essential  tremor and Parkinson’s disease are often invasive. Deep brain stimulation, for example, involves implanting small electrodes in the brain and sending out pulses of electrical current. Other treatment techniques are non-specific, unable to target specific areas of the brain where the disease is located.

Choa and his collaborator, Mary Kay Lobo, of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, will work to develop a less-invasive technology for intervention and treatment of brain disorders and diseases.

“We will be able to build critical tools that can noninvasively activate or block any part of the brain, and study their individual roles in functional networks,” said Choa. “We will also be able to explore the full potential of neural modulation for neural disease treatment and alteration of, for example, addictive behaviors.”

The second NCS grant was awarded to Seung-Jun Kim, assistant professor of CSEE and principal investigator (PI) on the project, and Tulay Adali, professor of CSEE and co-PI on the project, with partner Vince Calhoun Ph.D. ‘02, electrical engineering, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of New Mexico, and executive science officer at The Mind Research Network.

Over the four-year grant, Kim and Adali will use nearly half a million dollars in funding to better understand how individual brains function, specifically how differences from person to person can impact intervention and treatment plans.

“Functional brain networks are like fingerprints. They are unique to each individual,” explains Adali.

The researchers will work to piece together brain activation maps, developed through collecting data on individual human brains while research subjects are at rest. Understanding how the various areas of the brain work is helpful in predicting diseases and disorders that affect the brain, such as addiction. The researchers’ goal is to help doctors make more data-driven treatment plan decisions.

“By letting the data speak, researchers will have a better chance avoiding the pitfalls created by ‘taking their best guesses’,” explains Kim. “This project will be instrumental in developing algorithms and tools that will help researchers and clinicians adopt the data science approach for studying the massive-scale fMRI datasets collectively available across multiple repositories. This work will help them make exciting new discoveries about the human brain.”

Adali explains that often times doctors practice “reactionary medicine,” but the research supported by this NSF grant will help physicians make predictions when symptoms first appear, and allow for earlier intervention.

The NCS program was developed to support “bold efforts to go beyond single-discipline research efforts in order to advance brain science.” It is conceived as a piece of the BRAIN Initiative, “a coordinated research effort that seeks to accelerate the development of new neurotechnologies.” UMBC is one of only two universities that received more than one NCS grants in this round of funding.

Hrabowski Fund for Innovation awards grants for four unique faculty initiatives

Each year, the Hrabowski Fund for Innovation provides funding to faculty initiatives that challenge students to be active in their education and encourage faculty to be innovative and work across disciplines. Four projects received awards in  the spring 2016 round of the grant program.

Cedric Herring, professor and director of the Language, Literacy, and Culture Ph.D. program, and Loren Henderson, assistant professor of sociology and anthropology, received a grant  for “The Baltimore Metropolitan Area Study on Race, Inequality and the City: A Graduate Student Survey Research and Training Program.” Herring and Henderson will create a new multidisciplinary graduate program that trains students in survey research methods while generating social science data on issues of race and inequality in the Baltimore region to be shared with community leaders and policymakers to inform future decision-making.

Neil Rothman, professor of the practice of mechanical engineering, and Andrew Gadsden, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, will strengthen the foundation of the undergraduate mechanical engineering program by offering opportunities for students to explore conventional fabrication processesskills and knowledge that are in high-demand when entering the workforce. The project is called “Incorporating CNC Machining in a Machine Design Course.” The team will integrate computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools into the program’s machine design course to give students experience designing, building, and testing machines and fabricating components.

Two seed grants were also awarded through the 2016 Hrabowski Fund for Innovation competition. Ian Anson, assistant professor of political science, received a seed grant for “’Nobody’s Ever Asked That Question’: Implementation of Student-led Survey Projects to Enhance Analytical Skills in the Social Sciences.” He will develop a new course that allows students to collaborate on the design, implementation, and analysis of a large-scale national online survey. The goal of the course is to help students develop analytical research skills and engage them in understanding research methods by shifting learning experiences from instructor-driven to student-led.

Katherine Gibson and Jeremy Dixon, lecturers in computer science and electrical engineering, will use seed grant funding to look at ways in which the campus can reduce academic integrity violations in computer science programs. The “Improving Student Support to Reduce Academic Integrity Violations for Computer Science I and II” team will implement an improved system for educating students on class policies that uses aural and visual resources and a mandatory quiz to test comprehension. The new approach will also include developing and promoting supplemental academic opportunities for students struggling with course material.

UMBC researchers will combine sensors and social media to develop new flash flood alert system

Severe storms and rapidly accumulating rain recently contributed to historic flooding that caused extreme damage to the main street of Ellicott City, located not far from UMBC’s campus. This is not the first time this Howard County town has been affected by the intense rain in a short period of time.

A few years ago, Nirmalya Roy, assistant professor of information systems, was driving through a strong storm near Ellicott City when he was instructed to turn around by emergency personnel. Roy began thinking about how technology could help monitor flood-prone areas, alert authorities in real-time, and keep people out of harm’s way.

“After witnessing the devastating nature of flash flood in our own neighborhood, Ellicott City, now we understand even a fraction of a second can make a difference,” explains Roy.

Roy recently received a $225,000 grant from the National Science Foundation’s Computer and Network Systems. The funding will allow Roy to build a network of wireless sensors, using technology that is currently used in Spain but that has not yet been tested in the U.S., to monitor rainfall levels, develop predictive algorithms, and provide real-time flood updates to officials. The system will then be implemented in Howard County and Baltimore County to monitor future flood events in these areas.

The first phase of this project will seek to accurately monitor the depth of the water and speed at which accumulated water moves in a severe storm. This research is unique in how it combines more traditional data sources, from wireless sensors, with information from social media networks, like Twitter and Instagram, to forecast the severity of flash floods.

“This project will navigate the tradeoffs of combining the cyber, physical, and social aspects of a smart service system tuned to operate in an emergency situation in a smart city like real-time flash flood monitoring,” Roy explains.

Once the technology is implemented in flash-flood prone areas of Howard County and Baltimore County, human observations from social media will be incorporated to add contextual information about the weather event. Roy and Aryya Gangopadhyay, professor and chair of information systems, will combine data analytics and social network posts to understand the severity of the floods, to assist with the deployment of time-sensitive resources.

“We are thinking of adding a loud speaker module to our wireless sensor system to warn the people early, even before the emergency personnel get on the spot,” Roy says, “so that the daily commuters do not endanger their lives by driving further down the road, where they could be swept away by powerful streams of water.”

As the project progresses, Roy and Gangopadhyay will work with the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Global City Team Challenge program to study the viability of the wireless sensor system in Howard and Baltimore Counties.

Roy’s work is featured in “UMBC prof from Ellicott City developing flood-warning system” in The Daily Record. The White House included Roy’s work in a press release about its Smart Cities Initiative.

Lavik Lab develops nanoparticles to promote blood clotting after traumatic injury

When a person suffers a severe injury, it is crucial that any bleeding is stopped quickly. While there are many ways to stop external bleeding, current methods for stopping internal bleeding are limited.

Erin Lavik, professor of chemical, biochemical and environmental engineering, developed a nanoparticle that helps the body form blood clots and reduce internal bleeding. During the American Chemical Society’s national meeting, Lavik presented her work and explained how these nanoparticles could save lives.

“Compared to injuries that aren’t treated with the nanoparticles, we can cut the bleeding time in half and reduce total blood loss,” she explained.

Lavik and her team worked to create nanoparticles that attach to activated platelets so that clots can be formed to stop internal bleeding. These nanoparticles were initially developed and tested on rodents, to control bleeding due to brain and spinal cord injuries, but Lavik saw their potential to help people who have suffered a broader range of severe traumas.

After early testing revealed the nanoparticles successfully kept rodents from bleeding out, Lavik wanted to determine how human blood would respond to the presence of the nanoparticles.As a next step, the nanoparticles were tested in pig’s blood, which indicated that the immune system reacted well their presence.

In the future, Lavik and her team will test the nanoparticles in human blood, and will develop tests to fully understand the safety of these nanoparticles. She says they need to understand whether the particles may cause clotting that could lead to stroke before the product can be on the market, although she hopes the nanoparticles will eventually be available for clinical use.

UMBC alumni connect with fellow Retrievers through Baltimore-based summer internships

Each year several hundred UMBC students take advantage of the summer months to explore careers related to their majors, expand their knowledge and skills, and learn more about themselves through internships. The advancement of UMBC alumni as non-profit, corporate, and public service leaders as the university approaches its 50th birthday has added another layer to those internship opportunities: a chance for current students to work directly with alumni mentors.

One local nonprofit hosted four UMBC social work students focused on elder services in Baltimore communities. LaToya Solomon ‘17, Emily Preston ‘17, Jessica Praybe ‘17, and Sabrina Hall ‘18, interned with elder services coordinator Lauren Averella ‘11, social work, at Cities for All Ages, a Civic Works program where Averella also interned as a UMBC undergraduate.

Solomon heard about the program from a professor, and Preston, Praybe and Hall learned of the internship opportunity while attending a panel organized by Phi Alpha, the social work honor society at UMBC. Averella was one of the panelists and they were impressed with what she said about her work in Baltimore.
“I was really looking for a way to get my foot in the door, and I’m not sure which social work path I want to someday work in, so I wanted to try working with older adults,” explained Hall.

Cities for All Ages typically hosts two UMBC interns each summer, but Averella says this year’s candidates were so strong in their interviews that the organization decided to expand the number of positions to accept four. She has been impressed by their growth and the results of their work this summer.
Working as community organizers, the interns planned community events, visited neighborhoods around the city to share resources, and wrote monthly newsletters sent to an audience of 1,500. The students shared that budgeting, soliciting donations to support community events, and meeting deadlines were the most challenging aspects of the internship, but working with clients proved tremendously rewarding.
In addition to guiding the interns through their summer experience, Averella encouraged the students to shadow leaders in different roles, working on a broad range of projects. Averella says, “I encourage everyone to try everything,” to move beyond their comfort zones and get a sense of the range of career possibilities.

At House of Ruth, a shelter for victims of domestic violence, located a few miles from Cities for All Ages, Sondheim Public Affairs Scholar Allie Mann ‘17, psychology, is answering a 24-hour hotline. “I take calls from people who are experiencing intimate partner violence,” she explains, as well as from people who need help and support for other reasons.

During the beginning of her internship, Mann says she was nervous about taking calls on the hotline. “It’s very scary to be a student and be talking to people as if you have all the answers,” she shared. “I’m familiar with some community resources but I by no means know everything.”

Over the course of her internship her confidence grew, as she saw the impact of her work. “There are some people who I’ve talked to who when they’ve called back they’ve asked for me…Once they’ve told their story, it’s nice that they know someone here knows their story,” she says.

Erin Fox ‘08, gender and women’s studies and sociology, is supervising Mann, who is also a gender and women’s studies minor and who shares the same UMBC faculty mentor. She has been impressed by Mann’s deep commitment to the House of Ruth’s mission, and also wants to encourage students who are less familiar with the work service organizations do to see internships as a foot in the door.

“The reason you get an internship is to get that practical experience. So if you haven’t done something like this before, it shouldn’t be a barrier to you applying. If you look at the skills you learn through school and other jobs, a lot of them probably apply to the internships you’re applying for,” says Fox.
Mann says that her time at UMBC has “largely been shaped by service,” and she plans to continue her internship during the fall semester with support from the Shattuck Family Entrepreneur Internship Program coordinated by the Career Center and Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship.

Phanindra Kumar Kannaji M.S.‘19, computer science, spent the summer at PayPal in Lutherville-Timonium, in an internship he found through UMBC’s Career Center. Kannaji arrived at his internship interview with questions about the technologies he could expect to see and projects he would be working on. During his internship, his supervisor, Christopher Powell ‘13, computer science, was then able to give him opportunities to work with the technologies he expressed the most interest in learning more about.
Powell says he is consistently impressed with the technology programs at UMBC, and the skill set they provide to UMBC students. “PayPal is a big organization [that often works with] big schools like Stanford and MIT and Carnegie Mellon, so to have someone who came in on the same path that I came on at UMBC…has been really rewarding.”

PayPal works to connect interns around the world to one another through workshops and collaborative projects. “What we try to do is not have the interns work in a silo. We really want them to come in and gain the domain knowledge and learn what [PayPal employees] are doing because the ultimate goal is to hire them as full-time employees,” says Powell.

Kannaji enjoyed working on meaningful projects with tangible outcomes, including developing a new bot to alert support teams in the event of a technical problem. He encourages fellow students to “take the risk” of trying something new with an internship to get the most out of the experience, and Powell agrees. “Don’t be afraid to go out for an internship that you feel is above your skill level or current set of abilities,” Powell says. “You’re not going to know whether you can do something unless you actually try it.”

David Atlas ‘18, mathematics, spent the summer interning with Nick Welsh ‘93, information systems management, at T. Rowe Price in Baltimore. The two have worked together on data visualization projects— developing ways to display large quantities of information that are easily understandable—and on projects that seek to prevent errors in prediction models relating to financial risk.

Atlas feels that his UMBC education prepared him well for his internship both in terms of his approach to learning and work culture. “At UMBC, they definitely teach you to think outside of the box, and to work hard and keep pushing at things,” he says, sharing that he could also sense that focus on hard work and “grit” at T. Rowe Price.

One challenge that Atlas faced was determining which projects were the top priority, and which were not as time-sensitive. He learned about flexibility and prioritizing, and the importance of asking questions, especially when doing new tasks for the first time. “There are certain things that are only done here, in this building, so you can’t really learn about them in school,” he says.

Welsh is continually impressed with the quality of interns coming from UMBC, and he encourages students new to the internship experience to take initiative: “Make the most of it. Be engaged…Ask questions.”
Justin Kang ‘17, psychology, would like to pursue a career in human resources, and was excited for the opportunity to develop training guides and process internship application materials through an internship with the Madison House Autism Foundation, one of few foundations with a focus on supporting autistic adults. Kang worked closely with Steve Robinson ‘12, history, who was delighted to “mentor a fellow Retriever” who was so interested in the mission of the organization.

Kang found his internship to be a valuable crash-course in the differences between school and the workplace. “In the classroom, you get an A or a B, and you pretty much know how well you did from there, but in an office setting, you don’t really have that criteria to go off of,” says Kang. “You just have to keep doing work and constantly ask questions to see how you’re doing…and constantly find ways to improve yourself.”

Retrievers in Rio: UMBC alumni compete on the world stage at the 2016 Olympics

With the 2016 Olympic Games off to an exciting start in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the UMBC community will have the chance to see two alumni compete in the pool and on the field later this week.

Mohamed Hussein ‘14, mechanical engineering, a current master’s student in engineering management, will represent Egypt as a member of the swim team. He will compete in the 200 meter individual medley.

Also competing in Rio is Cleopatra Borel ‘02, interdisciplinary studies, who is participating in her fourth Olympic games as a member of the Trinidad and Tobago track and field team. She will compete in the women’s shot put competition.  

At UMBC, Hussein was a member of the men’s swimming and diving team for three seasons, and qualified for the NCAA Championships twice. He broke UMBC school records in both the 100 yard and 200 yard backstroke events. In 2015, The Baltimore Sun highlighted Hussein’s strength in the pool and his participation in the 2015 World Aquatics Championship.

In 2002, Borel, won the women’s shot put event at the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships, making her the first UMBC competitor to win a NCAA Division I title. She is a three-time All-American and broke the UMBC school record in both the indoor and outdoor shot put, in addition to the weight throw and hammer toss competitions.

Earlier this year, Emily Escobedo ‘17, psychology, participated in the 2016 United States Olympic Trials. She swam the 200 meter breaststroke in an impressive 2:27.03, which put her in 10th place in the semifinals, just two spots away from qualifying for the finals.

Hussein will swim in a 200 meter individual medley qualifying heat on Wednesday, August 10 at 1:14 p.m. The semifinals for that event will be held that evening, beginning 10:29 p.m., with the finals held Thursday, August 11, at 10:01 p.m. Borel will enter the shot put circle on Friday, August 12 at 10:05 a.m. for qualifying round of the women’s shot put competition. If she advances, Borel will participate in the medal round of the women’s shot put on Friday, August 12 at 10:00 p.m.

UMBC’s Rick Forno shares best practices to prevent cyber attacks against election technology

With the presidential election just a few months away, and a recent hack against the Democratic National Committee making headlines worldwide, many are asking tough questions about the security of the U.S. election infrastructure.

Rick Forno, assistant director of the UMBC Center for Cybersecurity and director of the Cybersecurity Graduate Program at UMBC, explains how electronic ballot boxes are vulnerable to attacks, and some tactics that the U.S. can use to secure the voting machines and protect the data it collects, in The Conversation (also published by Salon and U.S. News).

“One of the most obvious, direct ways to affect a country’s election is to interfere with the way citizens actually cast votes,” Forno writes.

The U.S. electronic voting network is spread out across the country, with many points of potential entry, which heightens the vulnerabilities of the system. Increasing risk of a hack to impact an election, one factor that has changed recently  “is the ability of individuals, governments, militaries and criminal or terrorist organizations to use internet-based toolscommonly called cyberweaponsnot only to gather information but also to generate influence within a target group,” says Forno.” But implementing best practices for cybersecurity, data collection, and information access can make it “more difficult for adversaries to conduct cyber mischief,” he suggests.

When citizens go to the polls to vote, they expect that the equipment, process, and people involved to be secure and trustworthy, as a cornerstone of the democratic system. “That trust must not be broken by complacency, lack of resources, or the intentional actions of a foreign power,” Forno writes.

bwtech@UMBC’s Potomac Photonics makes big strides in micro-manufacturing

Potomac Photonics, a bwtech@UMBC-based micro-manufacturing company, uses lasers, 3D printers and other technologies to alter and develop products with extreme precision, to the scale of one micron, smaller than a particle of dust.

“We like to say that if you can see it, we didn’t do it,” says Mike Adelstein ‘96, biochemistry and molecular biology, and president and CEO of Potomac Photonics, in a recent article in The Baltimore Sun.

The company has used lasers to insert tiny holes into medical stitches so localized radiation can be delivered in small doses to patients with breast and prostate cancer. These sutures have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and are now being used at hospitals, including Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Potomac Photonics is also working with a company in Europe to create a device to identify early stage cancer cells in a new way.

With all of the advances that the company is making, Adelstein anticipates that the Baltimore County region “will become a hotbed for manufacturing technology.” He suggests facilities and programs at UMBC and the Community College of Baltimore County will contribute significantly to that surge.

“There’s really a lot of resources and investment that are going on in this area right here to develop new advanced manufacturing technologies,” said Adelstein. “I think there’s a great opportunity for this region to grow.”

The Atlantic and Chronicle of Higher Education spotlight UMBC for boosting graduate student success

Why do half of U.S. doctoral students leave before earning their degrees?  A new article in The Atlantic examines graduate student experiences to understand the factors that contribute to this troubling statistic, and what universities like UMBC are doing to support doctoral students in completing their graduate programs.

Janet Rutledge, vice provost and dean of the graduate school, suggests in the article that lack of clear communication between faculty and graduate students can lead to negative outcomes. Faculty members, busy juggling research, teaching, and service commitments, don’t always communicate the full reasoning behind what they say and do, Rutledge says. She suggests, “it is only natural that a student makes certain assumptions based on what they have been able to observe,” which can lead to miscommunication and leave students feeling unsupported.

The Atlantic article highlights how communication can impact a student’s sense of academic performance and likelihood of success through the experience of Marcella Wilson ‘08 Ph.D., computer science, now a lecturer in information systems at UMBC. Wilson earned her undergraduate degree from a small, close-knit institution. When she arrived at UMBC to pursue her Ph.D. she remembers missing those close ties, and losing confidence in her ability to complete her degree.

Rutledge introduced Wilson to PROMISE: Maryland’s Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate. The statewide collaboration, with a particularly strong presence at UMBC, supports the academic and professional development of graduate students, particularly those pursuing degrees in STEM fields and those from underrepresented populations.

“Once I began to believe I could graduate, I realized that it was not about [the professors],” said Wilson, of the PROMISE program’s impact on her education. She shared, “I have good relationships with them all now.”

The Chronicle of Higher Education, in a new article on faculty diversity, credits PROMISE with increasing enrollment and degree completion in STEM Ph.D. and master’s degree programs at UMBC over the last ten years. Describing what makes the program tick, PROMISE Director Renetta G. Tull told the paper about the close mentorship, sense of community, seminars and other personal and professional development resources that support underrepresented minority students in completing graduate degrees.  

“We put a lot of family structure in these programs,” said Tull. “We took down a lot of cold boundaries of academic walls.”

The Daily Record highlights UMBC’s start-up boom

“In the past year, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County has launched five new startup companies,” writes reporter Dan Leaderman in The Daily Record. His article explores UMBC’s approach to increasing supports and opportunities for faculty who have ideas, inventions and discoveries with great commercial potential.

One big driver of the start-up boom: a new standard, simplified commercialization agreement that UMBC faculty and graduate students can use to launch their companies.

The Express Licensing Agreement (EXLA) was created by the Office of the Vice President for Research, and is a standard, non-negotiable agreement that can help streamline contract negotiations. Not only does the EXLA replace the previously time-consuming legal negotiation process, it also simplifies the commercialization process, removing barriers that can dissuade faculty from pursuing entrepreneurial interests.

“This was something that we needed to improve our ability to be flexible and responsive,” says Karl V. Steiner, vice president for research at UMBC. Steiner notes that many faculty see themselves as academics who publish findings before they see themselves as entrepreneurs who can turn their discoveries into accessible products and commercial ventures. He emphasizes that educating faculty about opportunities available to them as entrepreneurs, and how the commercialization process works, is key to advancing tech commercialization.

Of the five new start-ups launched at UMBC in the past year, three utilized the EXLA. Steiner anticipates that several more companies will soon be established with the help of the agreement.

What can be done after a cyber attack? UMBC cybersecurity expert offers tips following DNC breach

On June 14, the Democratic National Committee announced that its computer system had been hacked. Rick Forno, director of UMBC’s graduate program in cybersecurity and assistant director of the UMBC Center for Cybersecurity, discussed the “ongoing process” of stopping such attacks during a segment on the WOSU Radio’s “All Sides” show.

Forno made clear that there is no single, permanent solution to thwarting cyber threats, and a single mistake or vulnerability can have a major impact on digital security.. “All it takes is one person who does something wrong”opening an email or plugging in a thumb-drive containing malware“to place the entire organization at risk,” he says.

Forno also focused on the challenge of educating people about how to practice safe computing, and turning those practices into regular habits. The issues that arise with computing are as much human-based as they are technology-based, he suggests, plus, “You attack one problem and three more pop up the next day.”

To understand how a hack happened and to prevent hackers from taking advantage of vulnerabilities in the future, Forno suggests collecting and analyzing “artifacts” of the attackthings the hackers left behindand heightening ongoing monitoring of key systems, approaches the DNC is likely now taking.

Rick Forno explains digital fingerprints in The Daily Record

As they navigate the internet, people leave digital fingerprints in their wake, and companies regularly use this data to learn more about their customers and target audiences. If this data ends up in the hands of hackers, however, the information can be compromised, and as more data is stored electronically the risk of identity theft increases.

Rick Forno, assistant director of the UMBC Center for Cybersecurity and director of the Cybersecurity Graduate Program at UMBC, describes in The Daily Record tools to disguise digital fingerprints and protect personal information online. TrackOFF, a Baltimore-based software company, is one example highlighted in the piece, but Forno also notes that there are a variety of ways to keep online information private.

Forno says that younger generations are “more comfortable sharing material on the internet,” and recommends internet users balance the convenience of data sharing with care to protect their identities.

“I think the benefits of sharing is sort of the attraction, but people don’t think about ‘what am I giving up along the way?’,” cautions Forno.
